WHY YOU WANT TO BE WEIRD
Our little brains are wired for connection and social belonging. This is an evolutionary trait which has helped us survive and thrive as a species. Back in the day, being part of a group meant better odds of survival, so conformity became the way to go.
Research has shown that people often conform to social norms and expectations to gain acceptance and avoid rejection. It's like a mental autopilot – we want to fit in, be liked, and avoid the discomfort of being different. Fear of rejection is a powerful motivator. It activates the same brain regions associated with physical pain, making it a potent emotional experience.
When we label something as "weird," it can trigger thoughts of potential rejection. It's as if our brains are saying, "Hey, that's not how the tribe does things. If you do that, you might get left behind." And that's where the negative connotations of "weird" start to creep in.
The Power of Social Influence
Psychology also teaches us about the power of social influence. We tend to go along with what others do or say because it feels safer. This phenomenon, known as conformity, can lead to a collective mindset where "weirdness" gets equated with "different" and "different" gets linked with "unaccepted."
Weird > different > unaccepted
However, it’s important to understand that the actual concept of ‘‘weird’’ is highly subjective, and culturally dependent. What may seem weird to you, might be completely normal to me.
As our understanding of psychology deepens, we're realizing that embracing our unique weirdness is a path to genuine self-fulfillment and creativity.
Research also shows that embracing our authentic selves, quirks and all, leads to greater well-being and life satisfaction. When we break free from the fear of judgment, we open ourselves up to new experiences and perspectives, which can be incredibly enriching.
THE WEIRD BRAND
I could use the word authentic, but I’d like to rewire the way we think about the word weird. So, weirdness isn’t about fitting in; it’s about standing out in a memorable way. It makes you unforgettable, which is something you want as a brand!
Authenticity and weirdness are the cornerstones of compelling brand storytelling. Your brand's story should reflect its true essence, values, and quirks. When you embrace your authentic weirdness, your story becomes genuine and relatable, forging a deep emotional connection with your audience.
Here's the thing: when you're truly authentic and proudly weird, you attract like-minded souls. Your brand becomes a magnet for the people who resonate with your values and identity. These are the customers who become your loyal advocates, your tribe.
